Charlotte Groeneveld: Mismatched Elegance

When I think of soul I think of balance, warmth and happiness’, says fashion influencer and style blogger Charlotte Groeneveld, when we photographed her in New York. Originally from The Netherlands, Charlotte launched her blog, Thefashionguitar.com, long before women relied upon Instagram for a daily fashion fix. Recognising a gap in the market for a style blog with deeper meaning, it’s Charlotte’s soulful tone that makes her stand-out in the fashion industry.

With a personal style that could be described as classic-chic with a fashion-twist, over the past four years, thanks to aspirational fashion advice and honest storytelling, Charlotte’s blog has become a full-time job. ‘From the start I spent every available second on it. This became a bit tougher when I had my little boy James back in January 2012. Suddenly I was a mother and had my own business. I quickly learned that I had to become a master at planning in order to make it work’. And make it work she did. Her readers are very much part of her journey, something she relishes and loves as she helps them to lead their most stylish lives, conversing with them daily, replying to their messages.

‘Suddenly I was a mother and had my own business. I quickly learned that I had to become a master at planning in order to make it work’

Currently based in New York, a city she loves, Charlotte recognises being an influencer is a very fast developing business. With endless opportunities to work with brands, designers to expand her blog, she retains what she calls her ‘blog-ethics’. Tune in, and what you see is real, and although collaborating with brands may pay the bills, she won’t do anything she doesn’t believe in, ‘no matter how badly I want those Celine shoes!’ It’s this refreshing attitude women ascribe to.

‘I begged my mother to have my ears pierced, even though I know she didn’t really like it, given I was only 6 years old’

Right now, in Charlotte’s wardrobe, you’ll find a mix of ‘bold statement pieces and trend-focused items such as Balenciaga and Off-White, and the best “basics” and timeless pieces from brands such as Celine and Chanel’. As for her new season shopping list? ‘Lots of plaids, mixing different types, adding little neon details. Hiking boots, I have the ones by Gucci, but I love Ganni’s, too. I’m also into chunky knitwear, worn oversized with this season’s over-the-knee boots by Chanel.’ A mother of two and hoping for a third (go to her site for her honest account of IVF), Charlotte’s blog is more than just passion. Working tirelessly, going to every show and appointment, she’s carved out a career she truly loves.

Why collaborate with Âme? Jewelry is personal to her. ‘I begged my mother to have my ears pierced, even though I know she didn’t really like it, given I was only 6 years old’, she says. ‘It wasn’t considered the thing to do at that age, which I personally agree with. But I was strong-willed, and my mother let me, and I appreciate that, too’. Things may have changed a little since Charlotte was six, but she still knows what she wants. ‘I have a very specific taste in jewellery’, she says. ‘Mostly fine jewelry, I love thin diamond rings that I can stack or wear multiple on different fingers. Simple earrings, but only worn in one ear, I rarely wear earrings in both, let alone matching’. Mismatched earrings, over-sized sweaters and hiking boots – so classic with a twist of cool. In a flippant world of likes and follows, it’s no wonder Charlotte has proudly retained a loyal following of women. The best bit? She’s achieved it all with soul.
